Students are nominated by their home university in Jiangsu based on that institution’s selection processes and criteria. Application forms must contain a list of three Ontario universities at which the applicant wishes to study. The Academic Directors will place as many students as possible at their first-choice institution. It is program policy, however, that students be placed equitably throughout the system of participating Ontario universities. The prospective host university is responsible for deciding whether to admit students and at what level (graduate or undergraduate).

Exchange students must have completed 2 years of a recognized degree at their home university. Exchange participants will normally study for up to one academic year as non-degree students. Participating students will pay tuition at their home university and will be exempt from paying tuition at the host university. However, host universities may charge certain incidental administrative fees. Jiangsu students will be responsible for their expenses abroad, including travel, room and board, health and accident insurance, miscellaneous incidental expenses that may be required by the host university, and other living expenses. Jiangsu students will be responsible for fees related to the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP), mandatory for all international students at all Ontario universities with the exception of the University of Windsor which has its own mandatory health insurance program.
